The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug developed by Novartis (NYSE: NVS) for advanced breast cancer in post-menopausal women. The Swiss pharmaceutical company?s drug has been approved to be used in combination with Aromasin a drug used to treat menopausal women with early breast cancer who have already been treated with tamoxifen, which is marketed by Pfizer (NYSE: PFE).

Afinitor, approved for use in kidney cancer patients in 2009, has also been approved to treat tumors in the brain and pancreas. Analysts say it could be Novartis? next blockbuster drug, with projected sales topping more than $1 billion, seeing as it has already been approved for similar indications in Europe. Novartis? U.S. headquarters are in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Afinitor is the first approval of an mTOR inhibitor drug against hormone-receptor positive advanced breast cancer, according to Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA?s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in a statement from the regulator.

An mTOR inhibitor blocks the activity of of the mammalian target of rapamycin, which regulates growth factors that stimulate cell division and metabolism in tumor cells.
To date, more than six drugs have been approved to treat advanced breast cancer in post menopausal women.

A clinical study of 724 women designed to measure the length of time a patient lived without the cancer progressing, found that patients who received Afinitor plus Aromasin combination had a 4.6 month improvement in the median time to disease progression or death compared to patients receiving the placebo plus Aromasin, according to an FDA statement.

This year an estimated 226,870 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and about 39,510 will die from the disease, according to the FDA statement.

For comparison, consider that moving a 1,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom apartment (5,500 pounds, same as above) 200 miles from Chicago to Indianapolis would cost roughly $3,200 to $3,700. Same load, different distance.

Reputable movers use a rate book published by the Household Goods Carriers Bureau. The book, Tariff 400-M, provides estimates for all long-distance moving transactions based on the weight of your belongings and on the distance they are shipped, plus the amount of packing and other services that you require.

Additional costs

Beyond weight and distance, you may find one or more of these fees applied to your move:

• A transportation surcharge if the moving company pays workers more for working in metropolitan areas, where labor costs are often higher.
• You may opt to purchase full value protection insurance for your belongings. (Released value coverage is provided by movers at no cost, but protection is minimal ? just 60 cents per pound per article lost or damaged.)
• Charges for moving heavy items such as automobiles, boats, riding lawnmowers, snowmobiles or pianos.
• Additional charge for specialists brought in to disconnect gas mains or disassemble/assemble pianos and pool tables.
• Additional charge if the movers have to walk more than 75 feet from door to truck or need to use stairs or an elevator.
• Additional charge if your street is too narrow to accommodate the moving truck; movers may need to shuttle your belongings from your home to the truck via a smaller truck.

Be sure to ask your moving company?s sales representative about these add-on costs. Are there things you can do to avoid or reduce them? Working with the city to reserve parking space right outside your door, for instance, may prevent a surcharge.

Remember that the fees you pay to your movers are only a portion of what your total move will cost you. You also must factor in your personal travel and accommodations, on-the-go meals, the cost of new vehicle registration and driver?s license, utility hook-ups, and carpet and drapery installation.

TORIBIO, Colombia (AP) ? One of the stiffest blows in years to the prestige of Colombia's military wasn't inflicted by its leftist rebel foes and didn't claim a single soldier's life.

It was dealt by a relatively diminutive people called the Nasa who marched furiously up to the top of a 7,500-foot (2,300-meter) peak last week and forcibly dislodged a clutch of soldiers from a strategic outpost.

These verdant, craggy mountains are the Nasa's ancestral lands, and the Nasa say they are fed up with violent usurpers. They're demanding that the country's military and its rebel foes leave their enclave in the southwestern state of Cauca.

Yet neither side in Colombia's half-century old conflict is heeding the Nasas' wishes to leave them in peace. Their homeland lies on a key corridor that rebels and their chief funding source, cocaine, regularly transit on their way to the Pacific coast.

The government alleges that some of the 115,000 Nasa are allied with rebels of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which authorities say purchases the high-quality marijuana that many indigenous grow.

The Nasa's widely broadcast standoff with government troops has made this past week perhaps the most difficult of Juan Manuel Santos' two-year-old presidency, bringing Colombia's conflict into people's living rooms as it rarely has been in recent years and highlighting his government's inability to control large parts of the countryside. Santos even suffered the indignity of being jeered by the Nasa when he visited Toribio the previous week to announce investments in social programs.

Colombia's conflict plays out far from its sparkling cities. Its victims are its most marginalized.

"We sometimes get the impression that there's hardly any conflict at all, that it is very distant," said Jordi Raich, the International Committee of the Red Cross' country director. "But Colombia's armed conflict continues, and while it may be happening in remote areas, the humanitarian consequences are not lessened."

"Peace is distant," he added.

The conflict claims hundreds if not thousands of lives a year, mostly civilians killed in a dirty war involving right-wing death squads, rebels and the military. Yet in terms of violence, this month's upheaval in Cauca has been comparatively tame. Its damage is, instead, political.

It was clear to everyone during Santos' visit that the government had no control of the area. A FARC commander held court with reporters at a roadblock less than three miles (five kilometers) away.

"This is a political defeat for the Santos government," said Jorge Restrepo, an analyst at Colombia's CERAC think tank. "It puts in question his ability to win re-election."

Santos, a 60-year-old scion of a Bogota newspaper clan, won the presidency on the coattails of Alvaro Uribe, for whom he was defense minister from 2006 to 2009, a time of impressive military gains against the FARC.

Santos has not said whether he will seek re-election in 2014, but his popularity has plummeted as rebel violence mounts.

The insurgents have in recent months reverted to traditional hit-and-run tactics, and stepped up attacks on infrastructure including oil facilities. On Friday, they blew up a bridge in Caqueta state in southern Colombia that was vital to oil companies.

The trigger for the Toribio upheaval came before dawn on July 6 when rebels rained crude mortars and grenades on its town center, aiming for the sandbag-shrouded police station. Such munitions rarely hit their mark, and instead tore big chunks out of the brightly colored brick homes surrounding it. Three days later, when the bombardment ended, six people were wounded and about 100 left homeless, said Toribio's mayor, Ezequiel Vitonas.

Four people were wounded in a separate grenade attack on July 8 on a Toribio medical clinic. The next day, angry indigenous tried to dismantle the sandbag wall protecting the police station.

"We can't take it anymore," said the governor of the local Nasa reserve, Marcos Yule, counting about 1,000 such attacks in the past few years. The worst had come on July 9, 2011, he said, when the FARC exploded a bus bomb a block from Toribio's central plaza, killing three people.

Santos came to town two days after that anniversary, and later accused some "elements" of the Nasa of being in cahoots with the rebels, a charge that Nasa leaders deny.

On Saturday, Nasa elders convicted four alleged FARC rebels "arrested" three days earlier of disturbing public order and had them flogged. Three got 30 lashes and the fourth, a teenager, received five before they were released to their families, said Yule.

Colombia's counter-narcotics police director, Gen. Luis Perez, says the FARC would be pleased to have the military out of the area to lessen the chances of having their harvested marijuana seized.

Perez estimates at least 250 acres (100 hectares) of marijuana plants grow in the Cauca. What is grown on the Nasa indigenous reserve is legally protected from destruction. At night, the hills around Toribio are pitted with lights used by cultivators to accelerate the plants' growth and potency.

As those lights went off at dawn Wednesday, hundreds of Nasa headed for the strategic hilltop, where a small group of soldiers was encamped, charged with protecting communications antennas and keeping an eye on mountain trails regularly used by the FARC.

Among the Indians were "guardians," men and women who carry staffs hewed from palm trees and decorated with brightly colored ribbons. The staffs, says Yule, are instruments of authority only and cannot be used as weapons.

In the ensuing pandemonium, several dozen indigenous encircled six soldiers and forced them off the hilltop. One soldier fired a burst of shots into the air, sending reporters scurrying. But only egos were hurt.

The images, meanwhile, were published around the world.

The mayhem was strangely isolated. While those involved in the struggle kicked up dust, hundreds more Nasa peacefully rested on the grass as other solders gathered their belongings and sheepishly retreated downhill.

The next day, however, the soldiers, accompanied by riot police, were back. Firing tear gas and buckshot, they retook the hilltop. Eight Nasa were injured, none critically, said Luis Angel Penna, Toribio's assistant hospital director.

And the violence wasn't over.

Two local men were killed by gunfire over the next two days in the neighboring towns, one during a demonstration by farmers trying to eject soldiers from their village, another shot for allegedly failing to heed an order to halt at a military roadblock.

The tensions and mistrust are not new.

In May, 39-year-old coffee picker Julio Dagua was killed near Toribio by rebels who had falsely accused him of being an army informant, said his brother Edgar.

"He had been threatened for a long time," he added.

Edgar Dagua said residents won't be intimidated by either side in the conflict. "They're going to have to kill all of us."

Some of Toribio's residents earlier this month joined the more than 2 million Colombians who have been internally displaced by the country's conflict. They are living temporarily in a shelter in the nearby town of Santander de Quilichao.

One is Maria Alejandra Munoz, a garrulous, 38-year-old mother of three who earns her living washing other people's laundry by hand. "You get tired of this conflict."

Her brother, Ruben, said that "what people want most is peace for our town."

But how?

"That's difficult," said Maria Alejandra, leaning against a support in the cramped shelter. "If someone had a formula for it, they'd give it to the presidents."

Last month the National League for Democracy (NLD) parliamentarian warned that ?the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) ? with which all foreign participation in the energy sector takes place through joint venture arrangements, lacks both transparency and accountability at present.?

The US and some other Western governments have long taken their cue on Myanmar policy from Aung San Suu Kyi, but the Obama administration's decision on investment runs against that well-worn grain.

The US has likely taken what it sees as a pragmatic pro-business policy decision based on what it views as a combination meeting of strategic interests (countering China) and rewards as promised for the Myanmar government undertaking reforms.

The new US policy also allows American companies to bed down with MOGE, though they will be required to report annually to the State Department with evidence that their investments factor in workers' rights and the environment.

Reacting to the US announcement today, Aung San Suu Kyi told AFP that the move was ?nothing significant,? and wondered whether the US had sought some form of improved transparency from MOGE prior to the announcement.

Aung San Suu Kyi was recently-chided by the Myanmar government for continuing to call the country ?Burma,? the name of choice for opponents of Myanmar's military dictatorship, which issued a decree in 1989 changing the country's name from Burma to Myanmar in a move still controversial due to its arbitrary genesis.

The announcement came just hours after Ambassador Derek Mitchell took up post in Myanmar, the first American emissary to hold that position since 1990, when the NLD famously won a national election but was denied office by the military junta.

Analysis: Romney's secrecy becomes focus of Obama's attack strategy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney has secrets. Lots of them, perhaps. That provocative claim is at the core of President Barack Obama's latest attacks on his Republican rival, a strategy that is dominating the narrative of the presidential campaign and leading anxious Republicans to question Romney's tactics.

In ads, interviews and social-media blasts, the Democratic president's team is casting Romney as a mysterious figure who is guarding important secrets about his wealth and work history.

Feeding the Democrats' storyline: Romney's refusal to release more than a year or two of his tax returns, questions about whether he is being honest about when he left his job at Bain Capital, and the reams of records that have been kept secret from his years as Massachusetts governor and chief of the Salt Lake City Olympics.

The Obama team's tactic - summed up in its new TV ad that asks, "What is Mitt Romney hiding?" - is similar to a Republican strategy that Obama overcame en route to winning the presidency in 2008.

Back then, some conservatives claimed Obama was secretly a Muslim with a socialist agenda who had not been born in the United States, and therefore wasn't eligible to be president.

Obama's 2008 opponent, Republican John McCain, did not embrace such false attacks. He also nixed attempts to blast Obama for ties to a controversial pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

Obama's team, similarly, has made a point of not discussing Romney's Mormonism - even as some analysts are saying that the Democrats' focus on Romney's penchant for secrecy amounts to a subtle reminder of his affiliation with a religion that is mysterious to many Americans.

David Gergen, an adviser to two former Democratic and two Republican presidents, is among those who believe that questions about Romney's faith are an unspoken part of the Democrats' strategy of focusing on the secrecy issue.

"I think they're connected," he said. "Clearly they're trying to weave together: 'Do we really know what he did at Bain ..., do we really understand his faith and, you know, what he would do and who is he?' "

Democrats "know it's in the culture," Gergen said of questions about Romney's religion. "They don't have to say it. I think they're very intentionally weaving these together."

Gergen added that the Obama campaign's strategy could backfire if it mentioned Romney's religion directly.

A COMPARISON TO NIXON

Religion aside, Obama's campaign has taken hold of the secrecy argument against Romney with gusto. It argues that the attacks on Romney are a fair way to punch holes in the Republican's claim that his business experience makes him the most qualified candidate to fix the U.S. economy.

In its attempt to put Romney under a cloud of conspiracy, Obama's team has compared him with former Republican President Richard Nixon, whose devotion to secrecy contributed to his impeachment and resignation in 1974.

Romney's campaign has called the attacks unfair, accused Obama of misrepresentation, and argued that the president is trying to distract from his record on the economy.

But the attacks appear to be getting under Romney's skin, and have led George Will, William Kristol and other conservative analysts to call on Romney to release more tax returns to try to shift the conversation. Some want Romney to change the subject by announcing his choice as a vice presidential running mate.

Instead, Romney has demanded an apology from Obama, a request the president's team has rejected.

Obama's surrogates are now essentially using Romney's complaints about the attacks to cast the Republican as a rich guy who is unaccustomed to being questioned.

"Stop whining," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, an Obama supporter, said Sunday.

'WHAT IS HE HIDING?'

Conservatives fretting about Romney's response to the barrage of attacks from Obama are focused mostly on the Republican's reluctance to shed more light on his personal fortune, estimated to be up to $250 million.

Unlike most politicians seeking national office, Romney initially declined to release any of his tax returns. In January, under pressure from his opponents in the Republican primaries, he released his 2010 return and an estimate for 2011.

The returns indicated that Romney and his wife Ann held millions of dollars in offshore accounts and once had a Swiss bank account, raising questions about the lengths to which they had gone to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

Now conservatives such as Will, Kristol and Alabama Governor Robert Bentley are calling on Romney to release more tax returns - even if they show, as many suspect, that the Romneys managed to find enough tax shelters to effectively avoid paying any taxes some years.

Some worry that if Romney is so determined to keep his tax returns secret, they must be potentially damaging to the candidate.

"The costs of not releasing the returns are clear," Will said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "Therefore, he must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them."

Linda Peek Schacht, professor of political communication at Tennessee's Lipscomb University, said the Obama attacks "will be effective as long as the Romney campaign is handling the response so poorly. The longer they fail to respond in a clear way that puts some of these questions to rest, the worse the damage can be."

She said voters could accept some discrepancies in Romney's record, but not if he does not explain issues such as his keeping money in tax havens such as the Cayman Islands.

"Those are sort of code words or code phrases for, 'You can't trust him; what is he hiding...and why is he hiding it?'"

Obama's team appears to have learned from the 2004 campaign, during which Republican George W. Bush's team used the summer - when many Americans were tuning into the campaign - to define Democratic candidate John Kerry as an out-of-touch elitist. Kerry's campaign never recovered.

"Right now the real goal (for Obama) is to make (Romney) look like a really rich guy ... who makes and hides money in ways that most people would find objectionable," Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer said.

"The goal is also to simply subvert the promise of something new, just as opponents of Obama in 2008 floated things from his background in Chicago to suggest that the candidate was not who you thought."

Gergen said that while Obama's strategy might be successful, it carried some risks for the president if he defeats Romney in the November 6 election.

"Politically all of these attacks may in the end work, but it's also clear that they are going to come at the expense of governing in a second term" by making it even tougher for Obama to work with Republicans, Gergen said.

"The attacker gets hurt, too."

Comic Con ? Power to the Ladies! - The Blonde & The Brunette |

This past weekend, I was in San Diego for Comic Con.? This event is as huge, overwhelming, inspiring and colorful as you would imagine.? For those that are not familiar with Comic Con, here is a quick summary ? For the last 43 years, there is a celebration and collection of comic book vendors, illustrators, celebrities and fans lovingly titled ?Comic Con.?? This event is held in San Diego annually and is decidedly the largest collection of all things comics in the entire world.? What used to be a place to buy/sell comic books and meet other fans has become a destination for the entire entertainment industry.? It happens from Wednesday through Sunday and attracts some of the nicest, smartest and most loyal audiences in the world.? There are areas to walk around and just look at art, panel discussions with artists, celebrities and filmmakers, film premiers and even a masquerade ball on the last evening of the event.? It?s really like nothing else I have ever seen.

A running theme for the weekend that I noticed was empowered women.? As a woman, this was so encouraging to see.? I got to sit down with the Brand Manager Ashley Davidson from Wizards of the Coast, which has partnered with Hasbro to create a new game called KaiJudo.? (Learn more about that here!).? KaiJudo is mainly a card game but crosses all platforms of play ? actual cards, online, iPhone and (coming soon) the IPad.? This game premiered at Comic Con. ?One of the many neat details that I learned from speaking with Ashley was the fact that the Creative Director for the Wizards team, Shauna Narciso, is an empowered female as well.? What is typically known as a ?boy?s playground?? (the gaming world) is being led by strong, smart females.

The event that blew it all out of the water for me was Entertainment Weekly?s ? Powerful Women in Pop Culture (aka Women Who Kick Ass!)?? This event had a panel of 6 amazing actresses that all were smart, funny, strong and gorgeous in their own ways.? The panel was made up of Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood), Sarah Wayne Callies (Walking Dead), Kristin Kreuk (Beauty and the Beast and Smallville), Nikki Reed (Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 2), Anna Torv (Fringe), and a surprise appearance by Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess).? These women were asked different questions by the audience and all had inspiring, courageous answers.? The one question that almost stumped them all was, ?What do you feel is the largest issue facing women today??? Besides so eloquently stating that you cannot summarize all women?s issues into one quick answer (Sarah Wayne Callies said that), the issues of body image and self worth came up amongst all of them (Nikki Reed brought it up first).? From such an organic place, Reed stated that the audiences can demand healthier images of women being portrayed and they can also start the chain by taking better care of their own self esteems so that change is demanded.? It literally brought tears to my eyes.

If you are given the chance to go to Comic Con, I recommend it highly.? Even as someone who did not have the same devotion to the Comic Book World as the other attendees, I was inspired and left breathless more than once.? While it is exhausting, it was exhausting in the best way possible.
