Apple announces silicon cases specifically made for iPhone 5C, will be available for $29

Along with the announcement of the iPhone 5C, Apple has also announced a special line of cases made specifically for them. Made of a silicon rubber, they are made to compliment and accent whatever color iPhone 5C you have. They'll be priced at $29 each.

The cases have holes in the back of them so it can still show of the underlying color of the iPhone 5C. What do you guys think? Like them or think they look a little cheap? I'm curious as to whether or not they'll stretch out over time like typical silicon-rubber blend cases do.

China locks foreign consumers out of another bad-debt cleanup

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: pawprintcooper.com --- Sunday, September 08, 2013
Chinese banks have a colossal mess of bad debts to clean up for the second time in as many decades, but they are unlikely to call in the financial world?s most efficient mop and broom. Foreign investors that specialize in buying up distressed Debt are queuing outside the industry?s door, but bankers say China?s reluctance to pay the price of a privately funded clean-up means that door probably won?t open ? to the cost of Chinese tax-payers and, ultimately perhaps, the wider economy. Some economists believe the current mess than was required after the late-1990s Asian financial crisis. From 1999 to 2007, about $323 billion in bad loans were swept out of the banks, according to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) review of media reports over the period, in what amounted to a taxpayer-funded bailout. There is no ban on foreign investors buying up bad loans, but veterans of the 1999-2007 clean-up say the environment is as hostile to outsiders now as it was back then. A decade ago, they played only a limited role due to time-consuming red tape and difficulties enforcing their rights as creditors, such as being able to seize assets pledged as collateral for a soured loan. By 2006, according to PwC?s own estimates, foreigners bought up $26.5 billion, or around 18 percent of bad loans sold by four state-backed vehicles that had been created to clean them up at the country?s four biggest banks. From 2002 to 2007, investment banks like Goldman ...

(AP) ? The White House is making a big push to rally members of Congress and the American public behind President Barack Obama's plan for a U.S. military strike against Syria.

His administration says the government of Syrian President Bassar Assad used chemical weapons in an attack last month near Damascus, and that a strong U.S. response is needed to deter the future use of deadly chemicals.

Syria claims rebels carried out the Aug. 21 attack.

Obama's chief of staff, Denis McDonough, is set to make the White House's case during interviews on five Sunday talk shows.

Vice President Joe Biden plans to host a dinner Sunday night for a group of Senate Republicans. And lawmakers should expect more phone calls from top officials.

Obama is giving a national address Tuesday night.

Recent opinion surveys show intense American skepticism about military intervention in Syria, even among those who believe Syria's government used chemical weapons on its people.

Congress resumes work Monday after its summer break, but already a heated debate is underway about Syria.

On Wednesday, the first showdown Senate vote is likely over a resolution authorizing the "limited and specified use" of U.S. armed forces against Syria for no more than 90 days and barring American ground troops from combat. A final vote is expected at week's end.

A House vote appears likely during the week of Sept. 16.

A survey by The Associated Press shows that House members who are staking out positions are either opposed to or leaning against Obama's plan for a military strike by more than a 6-1 margin. The Senate is more evenly divided ahead of its vote.

Nearly half of the 433-member House and a third of the 100-member Senate remain undecided.

Complicating the effort in the Senate is the possibility that a three-fifths majority may be required. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says he is going to filibuster.

Still, Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, has predicted, "I think we're going to get 60 votes,"

Another bipartisan, classified briefing for Congress is set for Monday. McDonough plans to meet Tuesday with the House Democratic Caucus, whose support could be crucial as Obama faces opposition from House Republicans.

Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, plans to discuss Syria in a speech Monday at the New America Foundation.

At least 150 people picketed outside the White House on Saturday to oppose any military action against Syria. Demonstrations also took place in New York City, Boston and Indianapolis and in Louisiana and Michigan.

Also Saturday, a U.S. official released a DVD compilation of videos showing victims of the Aug. 21 attack. The DVD was shown to senators during a classified briefing on Thursday, and some of the videos were first broadcast on CNN. Supporters of the Syrian rebels had posted the videos on YouTube.

Gantt endorsement shakes up Charlotte mayor's race

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Next Tuesday voters will decide between Charlotte city councilman James Mitchell and Charlotte Mayor Pro-tem Patrick Cannon in the democratic primary.

In an important development, former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt endorsed Mitchell.

"I think James Mitchell is the kind of mayor who can do this job," Gantt said. "So I am delighted to stand here today and offer my support to a candidate who will help take Charlotte to the next level."

It wasn't just Gantt on the square and on the stump with Mitchell in Center City, but endorsements also came from two sitting council members up for re-election and a former school board member along with the previous chairman of the Mecklenburg County Commission.

But Patrick Cannon has his own backers.

The Mayor Pro Tem said,"?Ella Scarborough former city person has endorsed our candidacy.Nasif Majeed a former has endorsed our candidacy."

Despite not getting the nod from Gantt, Mayor pro tem Patrick Cannon takes pride in endorsements from previous council members, and says this race is about experience.

"Acting as mayor pro tem has allowed me to serve in the capacity of mayor for two previous mayors in their absence," he said.

On the other hand, Mitchell says his career is one driven by positive outcomes.

"When they able to bring the Knights downtown leadership and results. When they needed to keep the panthers here, leadership and results," Mitchell said.

The Gantt endorsement is a prize for either candidate, but Cannon The mayor pro tem says they the only real endorsement that matters is the one on Tuesday. "The biggest endorsement will come from the general populous."

According to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, the mayors race two years ago brought out three percent of the voters, and so far reports indicate that 26 hundred people have voted early.

Two other lesser known candidates are running on the democratic side. They are Gary Mitchell Dunn and Lucille Puckett.

Tuesday's democratic winner will face Republican Edwin Peacock on November 5.

farmerThe National Service Scheme (NSS), will continue to vigorously pursue the youth in agriculture programme through its agricultural projects, Alhaji Alhassan Imoro, Acting Executive Director of the Scheme said in Accra on Wednesday.

He made this known in a news conference to formally launch the 2013/2014 National Service year, during which more than 70,000 personnel are expected to be deployed throughout the country.

Alhaji Imoro said the cultivation of maize in six regional farms is on-going and harvesting of the crop is expected soon.

He noted that the Northern Region would join the agricultural project this year as the seventh region with an initial cultivation of 85 acres of maize at Damongo in the West Gonja District.

Alhaji Imoro said the scheme would pursue value addition to its produce through processing.

Already the NSS has started the processing of chicken products at its Nungua farms in the Greater Accra Region.

He said the facility would be inaugurated after final certification with the Ghana Standards Authority and other relevant bodies.

?The scheme has also initiated feasibility studies into oil palm production and plans are far advanced for the establishment of oil palm plantation on commercial scale in the Ashanti Region this year.

?We have gathered enough experience in the agricultural projects for the past three years and a review of our performance in this area requires diversification and development of aggressive marketing strategies to give more meaning to this programme,? he said.

The Executive Director observed that the scheme over the years is challenged by the increasing number of the graduates the tertiary institutions turn out every year.

He said managing the large numbers in the face of resource constraints is very challenging.

?The scheme has also managed its district offices with only one permanent staff with the support of national service personnel.

?This phenomenon challenges the effective performance of the district directors especially in time of monitoring? There is sometimes compromise.?

Cathy Lamb | For Writers: That Pesky Social Media/Marketing ...

henry's sistersI am often asked by established and new authors about publicity.

As in, what should I do to publicize my book? Or, what do you do, Cathy?

To be quite honest, I?ve gone round and round with the social media/marketing/PR question endlessly. By the end of my own debate, ?I want to poke my eyeballs out.

My publishing house does a lot for me in terms of advertising and marketing, which I am utterly grateful for, and it helps enormously, but what else do I do, personally?

Basically, I only do what I like to do because I don?t like doing what I don?t like to do. I am too old for that.

Here is what is worth your time, in my opinion, and what I like.

1) Create A Website. A website, professionally done, is a needed banana. ?(I just made that phrase up for fun) ?It?s where readers learn about you, your life, and your other books. They can write to you here, too.

2) Facebook. Of course. No brainer. ?Easy and fun, readers can chat informally with you, and you can post funny/thoughtful/interesting things about your life and books. Do not over post. Do not make them sick of you.

3) Amazon and Goodreads. Set up author pages.?Once it?s set up ? it?s set up. ?You add a photo of yourself looking as good as you can possibly look, some bio information that you?ve probably already written for your website, fill in a few questions, add photos here and there, link your blog in, make sure your book covers are up correctly and, voila, you?re done.

4) Speak at?Book Groups. I love them!?I will go to book groups if they?re 15 minutes from my house in Portland, Oregon, because they?re fun and interesting and I love to chat with women. I also skype with book groups and speak with them on speaker phone.

A Different Kind of Normal5) Blogging. I try to blog about my books, writing, and what?s going on in my own little world. ?Life and deadlines sometimes get in the way, but if you can blog once a week (which I don?t because I?m swamped and need to spend time daydreaming) you should.

I love Jane Porter?s blog ? current, short entries, lots of photos, fun, personal.?http://janeporter.com/janeblog/

You can also feature other authors, and they?ll post your interview on their blog. I post excerpts of my books sometimes, which is easy, to help promote them. (Like I did here, in running my own covers down the side of this web page!)

6) ?Pinterest.?I made up a board (Think of Pinterest as an online bulletin board) for each of my novels and will do so later for my short stories in the anthologies. Simple to set up, you don?t need to keep going back to it. You pin pretty pictures to your boards, add a tagline to advertise the characters in your book, the plot, etc. and you?re done. Readers get an idea of your book via pictures.

A question you might have is,?So, Cathy, what about running from book store to book store and giving presentations about your book?

If you are already a popular, well known author, (John Grisham, Geraldine Brooks, Khaled Hosseini) this could be a very worthwhile venture, especially because the publishing house picks up the cost.

But I?ve known authors who spent endless hours, days, weeks, months promoting their books, driving from book store to book store like a reading robot. That is not for me.

For one, unless you?re a Big Gun in the writing world, that cost is on you ? the hotels, the gas, and the food when you?re on the road. Plus, you set those things up, you talk to the manager, you find a date, you go and speak.

(such a pretty face?mech:*every sunday?MI have also heard, repeatedly, from other authors, even well known ones, and from managers of bookstores, that often no one shows up, or it?s only 5 ? 10 people, and they sell a few books. This is not worth your time. It?s smashingly bad for the ego, too.

If you do take yourself on a bookstore tour, you have to ask yourself at the end of it, and be brutal, how many books did you sell on those jaunts? Was it truly worth your time and effort and stress? Was it worth the time away from writing and the distraction? Did you lose money on it? (Probably that?s a yes).

Zipping to one bookstore after another is not for me.

I go to Powell?s when I have a new novel out. ?There?s about 60 ? 80 people, and they sell a bunch of books. It?s pleasant, we laugh, I talk, I like it. I like Powell?s. ?Do I think that if I went to other bookstores that I would have the same turn out? I don?t. I know a lot of the people who come to Powell?s, they?re friends and neighbors, regular readers.

I do talk at library events and have found that that?s worth it because I can meet readers, and I can sell a bunch of my books. Plus, I truly like speaking at library events.

You absolutely must balance social media/marketing/PR for your book with your writing and your life. That?stuff can eat up your time like a hungry Godzilla with extremely dubious results.

But HERE?S THE TRUTH, as I see it, the utter and inglorious truth.

What do I think really sells books?

You're Still The One 2Writing an outstanding book.

I absolutely believe that word of mouth is the best advertising. It is far, far better than doing all of the things I just listed above and will give you much less of a headache.

For example, I was at a book group recently and the women there talked about how they told all their friends, sisters, and neighbors about my books. That, above all else, is the best marketing. Sisters will read what their sisters loved. Friends will read what their friends loved. Neighbors will read what their neighbor on the other side of the fence read. You know how it is, women talk about everything ? men, sex, decorating, movies ? and books they love.

If you write an intriguing/gripping/thought provoking book, it?ll sell. Will you be a millionaire? Maybe. Most probably not. But you could definitely make a living.

Do the six things I posted above, but concentrate almost all of your energies on writing well. Writing excellently (Is excellently a word?). Write the best damn book you can write. Write your ass off.

That, truly, is your best publicity.

What will it take to screw in (an energy-efficient) light bulb?

energy

Andy Fisher, a systems engineer for GE, holds up a century-old light bulb placed next to a time capsule buried 100 years ago at GE's Lighting's Nela P...

AP

Andy Fisher, a systems engineer for GE, holds up a century-old light bulb. Note how the light bulbs in your house look pretty similar.

After a century of progress in tech, the light bulb remains the same, perhaps the most enduring of backward technology in use on a large scale.

The federally mandated phase-out of inefficient bulbs has met with intense resistance, from the Tea Party to panicked buyers stockpiling a lifetime of the classic A-Line incandescent, with its "warm" glow.

But beyond paranoid rhetoric is nostalgia: More than one hundred years after Thomas Edison's breakthrough, most consumers still want their light bulbs in the traditional pear shape. But creating an efficient light bulb in the traditional shape -- and that gives off that same warm light consumers have become accustomed to -- is proving tough for manufacturers.

(Read more:?11 ways your daily routine will never be the same again)

The pear shape no longer represents a vital production but is still what many people want to see on store shelves.

"Lighting is an art and a science. The appearance of fixtures and bulbs becomes part of our culture, and when you try to change culture, you better have a strong reason to do so," said Terry McGowan, a former manager of the lighting division at?GE who now serves as director of engineering for the American Lighting Association.

The light bulb of old, McGowan said, was significant because you could ?bounce it on the floor and it will not break.

?It will bounce like a ball.?

The classic form also houses several tricky engineering problems (the need for a heat sink and lighting quality that recreates the diffuse, "warm" light to which homes lit by incandescent bulbs have become accustomed). Companies are still working on design and engineering solutions to these challenges within an LED frame.

How to make an appealing LED light has divided manufacturers. The competition is a once-in-an-era opportunity, as LED bulbs can provide up to 25,000 hours of residential use.

"How we transition to CFL [compact fluorescent] bulbs and LEDs is a billion-dollar question," said Todd Manegold, director of LED lamps at Philips. Billion, literally: There are about 5.6 billion light bulbs in U.S. residential use.

(Read more:?The booming business of 3-D printing)

"Manufacturers are trying to capture these billions of sockets now residing with incandescent bulbs," McGowan said. "And you have to be the size and shape of what's in those sockets. If you don't get that socket now, it won't be available again until who knows when. It's a desperate horse race."

John Stranick, head of GE's North American consumer lighting business, said the classic A-line shape is one that consumers grew up with. Although inefficient, he said, it diffuses heat well and has a nice light quality.

GE's experience with compact flourescents showed that even after the company had worked out start-up time and warmth problems, consumers would reject them based on design.

"Even before we got to LEDs, we had to replicate that iconic shape," Stranick said.

(Read more:?Crowdfund this: Medical devices)

McGowan of the American Lighting Association said Phillips has been "carefully treading the line between appearance and function" and has managed to make LED lighting interesting, even if it can be argued that won't be the quickest route to mass adoption.

Advanced Lumonics has a museum with two examples of every LED bulb ever made, a kind of Noah's Ark of LED history, including "corncob" and "snowcone" designs. The "scrapped" designs of LEDs' early days also include external "fins" used as an approach to the heat sink issues, and colored phosphor coatings over the bulb exterior as an approach to light diffusion?LEDs by nature emit light in one direction, while a residence typically requires an omni-directional lighting source.

Costigliola said Cree wants to make a bulb with the Edison shape, and that the company's sales data may show that for mass adoption to take place, the standard shape needs to be a big part of the equation.

"The Cree bulb isn't a show-off," he said, compared with a higher-priced Switch "liquid-cooled" bulb, or a Philips' Wi-Fi-enabled Hue bulb or LED lighting fixture?the latter costing several hundred dollars. Though he stressed that price remains king: When Philips lowered the price on its yellow phosphor-coated LED bulbs, a technical solution Philips has since moved away from in newer designs, EarthLED.com saw a bump in orders, able to "move 4,000 a month on Amazon."

McGowan said that it's easy to lose sight of the historical fact that no light source ever invented has completely disappeared.

"The Amish have nothing but kerosene lamps in their living rooms," he said. "The consumer can't be dictated to in lighting, and the faux old-fashioned bulbs with carbon filaments that glow are very popular now. It's appearance lighting, not efficient lighting."

"LEDs won't take over 100 percent of the market. All these technologies will exist, but comfort level will dictate how much adoption there is, and if you make it familiar it accelerates the comfort level," he said.

Which Freshmen Will Make an Immediate Impact for Arizona State Football?

The Arizona State Sun Devils are poised for a breakout season in 2013, and there will surely be some freshmen who become household names come year's end.

Last year, D.J. Foster made an immediate impact for ASU as a true freshman.

Foster accounted for over 1,000 all-purpose yards and scored six touchdowns last year. His unique playmaking ability made him an asset even as a freshman.

This year, there are a few young guns looking to make names for themselves just like Foster did.

Look for Cameron Smith, Marcus Ball and Zane Gonzalez to each have an immediate impact on ASU's success in 2013.

Which freshman will have biggest impact?

Which freshman will have biggest impact?

  • Cameron Smith

  • Zane Gonzalez

  • Marcus Ball

  • Other

?

Cameron Smith

ASU had plenty of problems with its wide receivers last season. Therefore, it was important for head coach Todd Graham to sign some guys who would be able to bolster the talent level of that group.

Smith is one of those guys.

He runs a 4.40 40-yard dash, is 6'0'' and has a good set of hands. His high school coach?Joe McBride says?Smith is a good talent on the field but an even better guy off of it, per the school's official website:

He's a tremendous player who's extremely fast. He's a smart kid with great character who is a great route runner and has great hands. He's a very humble and quiet kid off the field, but on the field he is a fierce competitor and always plays hard

Smith seems to be a perfect fit for Graham's style.

Brad Denny of AZfamily.com asked?Smith what fans should expect from his game in 2013, and in the words of Ricky Bobby, he said he wants to go fast:

Speed for sure. That's what they tell me, at least. I'm really driven to succeed, so that I can help the team out.?I'm not proud of what I've done so far. I have a long ways to go, in my opinion. I just think that I have something I can improve upon.

While he probably won't see extended playing time until later in the year when he knows the system better, Smith is still someone offensive coordinator Mike Norvell can throw out there to stretch the field or possibly run a few times.

His blazing speed makes his a threat anytime he has the ball in his hands.

?

Marcus Ball

OK, maybe Ball won't be able to make an immediate impact for ASU due to his recent injury, but when his shoulder heals expect him to make some big plays on defense.

Ball is a physical safety who can play the pass and run. He played quarterback and safety in high school and signed with ASU as an athlete.?

Ball will be an impact player on defense in 2013. Photo courtesy of: dieharddevil.com

He could really make an impact on both sides of the ball, but it appears likely that after his injury his spot will be with the defense.

Ball is one of those players who has a nose for making plays, and he's shown that in practice.

Graham told AZcentral.com's Doug Haller?he wants Ball on the field saying, ?I?m going to have a hard time not finding a place for him because of his athleticism and what he can do."

There was even talk that Ball would become a starting safety as a true freshman before he went down with his shoulder injury.

Once he's back and healthy, though, expect Ball to be on the field somewhere and to make big plays.

?

Zane Gonzalez

For the past few years, the kicking position has garnered its fair share of hatred and disdain from Sun Devil fans.

Between Thomas Weber and Alex?Garoutte, the Sun Devils have seen wins fall just short or flutter wide.

Gonzalez may be the solution.

Doug Haller writes that while ASU's kicking game was a major concern this offseason, Gonzalez has solidified the position:

Freshman Zane Gonzalez has performed brilliantly on field goals. Through three weeks, special-teams coach Joe Lorig said Gonzalez made 92 percent of his attempts with a long of 49 yards. Last season, the Sun Devils made 65 percent of 23 attempts.?

Gonzalez will be the solution to ASU's kicking issues. Photo courtesy of: thesundevils.com

That's music to any Sun Devils' ears.

Gonzalez made every kick and extra point during his senior year and missed only two kicks his junior year.

Fans should expect Gonzalez to finally provide some quality and stability to ASU's kicking game in 2013.

The Saga of Star Wars' Toys Is Almost Better Than the Actual Movies

As much as the original Star Wars was a revolution in filmmaking that gave birth to the summer blockbuster, it was also responsible for the idea of marketing and merchandising the crap out of a film property. It all started with a hastily-designed line of action figures and toys that collectors are still desperate to snatch up. And if you were young enough to remember a Boba Fett figure that never actually fired rockets, you'll probably love Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys.

Piranha Games has announced that a customized Jenner mech has raised more than $100,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The mech was made after five-year-old Sarah Parries, who played the game with her father, lost her battle with cancer.

Bryan Ekman, creative director of Piranha Games, said the team thought that "$10,000 would be a number we could all be proud of ... the response from the MechWarrior community and from the games industry at large has been overwhelming."

Sarah's Jenner is still on sale until Aug. 20 for $10.

Facebook update adds new lockscreen option, Messenger Chat Heads to more devices

Facebook Home

Facebook Home also now officially supported on Nexus 4 and Galaxy S4.

Updates to Facebook and Facebook Messenger tonight have brought out a new feature and new device support across the apps. First up is the Facebook app itself, which added a new lock screen option in the settings to show a Facebook Home-like lock screen with status updates from your friends without replacing your entire launcher with Home. To enable it, head to the Facebook app and hit the settings, then scroll down to "Use as Lock Screen" and give it a moment to enable.

The update also added official Nexus 4 and Galaxy S4 support for Facebook Home, which users have been using pretty successfully unofficially for a while now. On the Messenger side, the app update added Chat Heads functionality for more devices —  presumably on the lower end as the update specifically named the Galaxy Y and HTC Wildfire.

(Reuters) - Essar Energy Plc reported better-than-expected full-year earnings as improving refining capacity at its core oil refineries -- Vadinar in India and Stanlow in Britain -- pushed up margins.

The London-listed power, oil and gas arm of privately owned Indian conglomerate Essar Group, said earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation, on a current price basis, was $1.34 billion (872.62 million pounds) in the year ended March 31, compared with a company-provided analysts' estimate of $1.17 billion.

The company this year moved its year-end to March from December, making the previous comparative period a 15 month one.

Full-year refining margins rose 88 percent to $7.96 per barrel of oil at the company's core Essar Oil business, which owns a network of 1,600 franchised gas stations across India.

Essar Energy's assets also include a 50 percent stake in Kenya Petroleum Refinery Ltd, and 2,034 mmboe of reserves and resources at its exploration and production blocks.

Essar Energy's shares, which have shed about 6 percent of their value over the past year, were trading up about 2 percent at 123 pence at 0704 GMT on Monday on the London Stock Exchange.

Zombies roam the animal kingdom ? and some of them might be after us

David Hughes / Penn State

One fungus took over the brain of this zombified ant, but the first fungus was sabotaged by a different type of parasitic fungus.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

The zombies in "World War Z" are just actors ??but in the animal world, zombies are a fact of life. Evolution can come up with some fiendish twists: For example, there are some species that bend other creatures to their will to keep their bizarre life cycles going. Or just to feast on their delicious braaaains.

To celebrate the premiere of "World War Z," here's a top-ten list of zombies from the animal kingdom, finishing up with a particularly pernicious parasite that can pose a risk to humans:

Zombie ants: There are special kinds of?zombifying fungi that infect carpenter ants?in Thailand and Brazil. The fungus?grows into the ant's brain and compels it to climb down and clamp onto to the low leaves that provide the fungus with its favored breeding ground. After the ant dies, the fungus sprouts from its head and shoots out spores to infect other ants. But this zombie isn't invincible: Scientists recently discovered a different kind of fungus that can?castrate the zombifying fungus before it spreads.

Zombie bees: A parasitic fly known as Apocephalus borealis can inject its eggs into a honeybee's abdomen, where the fly larvae mature. The parasitized bees abandon their hives and walk in circles ? but eventually they fall over. "It really painted a picture of something like a zombie," says San Francisco State University's Andrew Core. About seven days after infection, the mature larvae burst out from the dead bees' bodies, renewing the gruesome circle of life. It gets worse: The zombie bees are spreading.

Zombie birds: Great tits look so cute when they're perched on a branch. You'd never know that they have a taste for bat brains. In Hungary, the birds listen for the calls sent out by the cave-dwelling pipistrelle bats when they rouse themselves from hibernation. Then they track down the groggy bats, crack their skulls open and eat their brains. Researchers found that the trick is passed down from one generation of great tits to the next, providing an example of cultural transmission in avian species. The great tits helped inspire the title of Becky Crew's book about bizarre biology, "Zombie Birds, Astronaut Fish and Other Weird Animals." ??

Zombie caterpillars: You don't want to be around when a zombified caterpillar turns to goo. There's a species of baculovirus that infects gypsy moth caterpillars and sends them up into the treetops to die. When the caterpillar's body liquefies, the ooze drips down onto other caterpillars?? creating more zombies. Scientists say a single gene in the virus interferes with the caterpillar's hormones, apparently triggering the uncharacteristic urge to climb during the day.?

Zombie crabs: A tiny barnacle called Sacculina?can latch onto male crabs?and blast them with so much estrogen that they dig empty nests, made to order?for the barnacle to lay its eggs inside. If the crab host happens to be a female, no problem: The barnacle merely wipes out the host's reproductive system, and then sets her digging.

A zombie cricket jumps into a pool and dies, which gives the mind-controlling parasitic worm inside the cricket its opportunity to swim away.

Zombie crickets: Parasitic hairworms have been known to invade crickets, take over their nervous system and then force their?buggy hosts?to drown themselves?so that the grown worm can swim out and look for a mate. Scientists aren't exactly sure how crickets pick up the parasite,?but it may involve ingesting water or bugs that contain hairworm larvae.

Zombie fish: What could be ickier than having a zombie crustacean eat out your tongue?? and then take its place in your mouth? That's what the beastie known as Cymothoa exigua does to spotted rose snappers. C. exigua latches onto the fish's tongue and sucks the blood out of it until it falls off. Then it attaches itself to the stub that's left behind, and changes its diet from blood to fish mucus. The fish and the parasite carry on that way for the rest of their lives. If you're freaked out by the "Alien" movies, do not look at this picture.

Zombie ladybugs:?Dinocampus coccinellae, a species of parasitic wasp, lays a single egg inside the abdomen of a ladybug. The wasp larva eats its way through the ladybug's insides, then pops out and spins a cocoon. End of story for the ladybug, right? Not necessarily. The ladybug often lives on as one of the undead, partially paralyzed on top of the cocoon. There's evidence that the wasp larva provides resources to keep the ladybug alive, while the ladybug provides an extra layer of protection from bugs that might otherwise eat the larva.?

Zombie spiders: Another kind of zombifying wasp targets the orb spider known as Plesiometa argyra. The wasp temporarily paralyzes the spider, lays an egg on the tip of its abdomen, and leaves it to mature. The orb spider goes about its business, weaving its usual circular webs ? until, one night, the wasp larva sends a chemical signal to the spider's brain. The spider spins a weird-looking web, seemingly designed to provide shelter from rain, wind and predators. The next day, the larva kills the spider ??and moves into the home it programmed the spider to build. ??

Zombie rats ... and humans??The most insidious zombie of the animal world may well be the tiny parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, or Toxo for short. This parasite can reproduce sexually only in cat intestines, which poses a challenge when the little critters wind up in cat poop. Here's how Toxo gets back inside the cat: When mice or rats nibble on the poop, they also gobble up some of the Toxo parasites. The parasites migrate to the brain, where they release chemicals that make the rodents lower their guard when they're around cats. Scientists think that Toxo-infected mice start to regard the smell of cat pee as something sexy rather than a cause for alarm. The cats eat the smitten rats, and the Toxo life cycle begins again.

The scary part is that Toxo can find its way into the human nervous system as well. About 30 percent of the world's population is thought to be infected. Pregnant women should be careful about avoiding infection, because the parasite can pose a risk to the unborn baby. There's also some evidence of a connection between Toxo and changes in mood or personality, and perhaps even conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. The linkage isn't rock-solid, and most of those who are infected suffer no apparent effects. But if you need a plot device for your next zombie-movie script, Toxo is a good place to start.

Please Don't Ruin Instagram With Crappy Videos

Please Don't Ruin Instagram With Crappy Videos

An Instagram photo carries a certain artificial heft to it. There's a sense of importance, or at least permanence, to the photos we post to these accounts that you don't get from tweets or even status updates on Facebook. Instagram isn't naturally this way; it's developed this weight because everything on Instagram is beautiful. And with the addition of video, we've got a wonderful opportunity to make the platform more interesting?but we have to be careful.

One of the great joys of Instagram until now has been the lazy scroll. Fire up the app, and just swipe and swipe and swipe and passively take it all in while the colors and shapes sail past your eyes. You pause every so often to like something or make a comment, but the pleasure is never interrupted. The problem of video was apparent when, immediately after getting video, people started posting videos of their desks (a phenomenon we also saw with Vine).

Video is a different medium than photography, and if we start taking videos on Instagram the way we have for YouTube, Snapchat, Vine, et al, our feeds will become polluted with crap. Because unlike those other services, there's already something in place that we like a lot.

Here are a few simple tips to keep the quality high.

Don't broadcast, curate

People have been posting videos to the Internet forever, and the last thing we need is just another place to post videos of your view out the window while you're driving down the highway or waiting in line at the post office. Instagram is everyone's prettiest corner of the internet, free from the clutter and noise of other areas, generally just more beautiful and thoughtful. When you go back to your Instagram history it should be a museum-grade gallery of awesome.

Which is easy to say! But the message, basically, is to treat videos with just as much scrutiny as you'd use for an image on Instagram.

15 seconds is, like, an Internet eternity

This is critical. Let's try to keep our videos concise. You don't need to use the full 15-seconds just because you can. It's tempting to just sit there and record and record. Think about the terse eloquence of gifs. Don't waste my time. You don't want someone to sit there for 15 seconds and then feel pissed off.

Only post things that can lick themselves

It's a well established fact that sunsets, food, and animals are the ideal subject matter for Instagram photos. This is not the case for video. If I'm deliberately watching a video on the Internet, there better be at least the possibility that whatever I'm looking will at some point be licking something else or licking itself. If not, I'm not interested in looking at for more than one frame. That means only take videos of pets. And maybe people. Possible exceptions for food items that are at risk of exploding, collapsing, or contain moving pieces.

(AP) ? An air show in southwestern Ohio reopened with a moment of silence Sunday, a day after a pilot and wing walker died in a horrifying, fiery crash in front of thousands of spectators.

The Vectren Air Show near Dayton, which closed right after Saturday's crash, resumed Sunday in honor of pilot Charlie Schwenker and veteran stuntwoman Jane Wicker, both of Virginia.

"As a pilot, you accept the fact that accidents do happen ? it's an accepted risk we take," said John King, president of the Flying Circus Airshow, which had trained Wicker.

"They were both dedicated to flying and the act. They were true, ultimate professionals," King said. "I don't know of anyone who could have done any better than what they were doing."

Wicker and Schwenker were killed when their plane crashed in front of spectators who screamed in shock as the aircraft became engulfed in flames. No one else was hurt.

Video of the crash showed their plane gliding through the sky before abruptly rolled over, crashing and exploding into flames. Wicker, performing at the Dayton show for the first time, had been sitting atop the 450 HP Stearmans.

The decision to resume the show a day after the crash was an emotional one supported by Wicker's ex-husband, said air show general manager Brenda Kerfoot.

"He said, 'This is what Jane and Charlie would have wanted,'" Kerfoot said. "'They want you to have a safe show and go out there and do what you do best.'"

Wicker, 44, who lived in Bristow, Va., was a mother of two boys and engaged to be married, Kerfoot said.

"She was a well-rounded, delightful woman who was passionate about aviation," said Kerfoot. "She was in the business for a very long time and was well-loved by the air show community; she would certainly have wanted the show to go on."

Schwenker, 64, of Oakton, Va., was married.

The cause of the crash is unclear and the conclusion of an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board likely will take months. The NTSB planned a mid-afternoon news conference Sunday to discuss the accident.

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, Va., in 1990, for a wing-walking position, thinking it would be fun. She was a contract employee who worked as a Federal Aviation Administration budget analyst, the FAA said.

In one post on Wicker's site, the stuntwoman explains what she loved most about her job.

"There is nothing that feels more exhilarating or freer to me than the wind and sky rushing by me as the earth rolls around my head," the post says. "I'm alive up there. To soar like a bird and touch the sky puts me in a place where I feel I totally belong. It's the only thing I've done that I've never questioned, never hesitated about and always felt was my destiny."

She also answered a question she said she got frequently: What about the risk?

"I feel safer on the wing of my airplane than I do driving to the airport," she wrote. "Why? Because I'm in control of those risks and not at the mercy of those other drivers."

A program for the air show touted Wicker as a performer of "heart-stopping" feats who did moves that "no other wing walker is brave enough to try."

"Wing riding is not for this damsel; her wing walking style is the real thing," the program said. "With no safety line and no parachute, Jane amazes the crowd by climbing, walking, and hanging all over her beautiful ... aircraft.

"Spectators are sure to gasp as this daredevil demonstrates in true form the unbelievable art of wing walking," it says.

On the video of the crash, an announcer narrates as Wicker's plane glides through the air.

"Keep an eye on Jane. Keep an eye on Charlie. Watch this! Jane Wicker, sitting on top of the world," the announcer said, right before the plane makes a quick turn and nosedive.

Some spectators said they knew something was wrong because the plane was flying low and slow.

Thanh Tran, of Fairfield, said he could see a look of concern on Wicker's face just before the plane went down.

"She looked very scared," he said. "Then the airplane crashed on the ground. After that, it was terrible, man ... very terrible."

In 2011, wing walker Todd Green fell 200 feet to his death at an air show in Michigan while performing a stunt in which he grabbed the skid of a helicopter.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane slammed into the runway while performing loop-to-loops and caught fire.

Still, King said, in the four decades since Flying Circus started, many kids have been so inspired watching the show that they later became military and commercial pilots.

"Our show takes them back to the barnstorming era of air shows," he said. "It's amazing how many people have taken up aviation careers because of their first exposure to the Flying Circus."

Want a Better Marriage? Be a Better Spouse.

Couple holding hands. How long were you married when you realized that your spouse didn?t seem quiet as perfect as you once thought? Does he/she seem to push your buttons more often now than when you were dating?

Of course no one really expects their spouse to be perfect. We married them for better or worse ? right?

Once the so-called honeymoon stage has passed, couples begin to settle into the routines of married life. It?s at this point that some may question what happened to that sweet girl I married, or where did that considerate guy that I married disappear to? The truth is; that guy/girl that you married is still right there. If the honeymoon has ended in your marriage and your bride/groom seems different, then maybe it?s time to stop evaluating how they have changed and instead take a look in the mirror.

Have you ever considered that your partner was sweet, cute, kind, and considerate because while you were dating, you actually brought those traits out in your partner? Perhaps you too were more pleasant, more fun, and more concerned with your appearance back then, so your partner responded in the same manner. Why should this change now that you?re married? Why does the honeymoon have to end? As the marriage matures, the relationship does change in some ways as both partners become more comfortable in their roles as husband/wife, but there is no reason why the marriage relationship can?t be just as wonderful as the dating relationship. Actually, I think God intends for our relationship in marriage to be even more wonderful than it ever was while dating.

If you don?t feel that your relationship is as great as you would like it to be, then here are a few suggestions that may help. However, this is not a list for ?fixing? your spouse or tips on how to make your husband/wife a better mate. No, this list is all about ?you?, because the first step to a better marriage relationship is to first be a better spouse.

  1. Pray for your marriage.
  2. Apologize for any part that you played in an argument. Be quick to admit when you have reacted in ways that are hurtful to your spouse and ask for forgiveness.
  3. Forgive your spouse if he/she hurts you. Forgive even if they do not offer an apology.
  4. Extend grace to your spouse when they fail in some way. Try to be understanding and learn to help compensate for one another?s weaknesses.
  5. Pray for your spouse.
  6. Work on your own weaknesses. Be aware of your own short-comings and areas in your own life that are not pleasing to your spouse or to God.
  7. Show Appreciation to your spouse for even the small things he/she does, such as taking out the trash. Express admiration for his/her good qualities.
  8. Listen to your spouse and give him/her an opportunity to explain his/her feelings and then ?listen? don?t react. Try to see the situation from his/her perspective.
  9. Don?t try to control or manipulate your spouse?s behavior. You have to be responsible for your own behavior and that is more than enough to manage.
  10. Pray that God help you to be a better spouse.
  11. Take care of yourself so you can be at your best. If you were not a super-model when you married, then of course you aren?t expected to look like one after the marriage, but your spouse deserves your best. Take care of body and go the extra mile sometimes to impress your spouse.
  12. Be physically intimate with your spouse often. This includes sexual intimacy, snuggling, kissing, or just hand-holding. Don?t wait for your partner to make the move. Just get physical and let him/her know that you enjoy being close.
  13. Seek counsel for serious issues. There are times in marriage that even when you?ve done all you can do to be a good spouse, there are still problems. If your partner is abusive or is involved in a sexual sin, you should seek pastoral or professional counseling.
  14. Allow Christ to meet your needs. Don?t expect your spouse to be the source of all your happiness or to meet all your emotional needs. Only Christ can meet all our needs.
  15. Pray, Pray, Pray.

The most important thing in creating a happy marriage is to put Christ in the center. Allow your life to be a reflection of Christ to your spouse. Learn to love your spouse with the kind of love described in God?s Word.

Love is patient,?love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.?It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,?it is not easily angered,?it keeps no record of wrongs. ?Love does not delight in evil?but rejoices with the truth.?It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.?Love never fails?? (1 Cor. 13:4-8)

When Does Your Sales Presentation Start? A Sales Presentation Tip ...

Here is an important sales presentation tip I shared with?Long & Foster, the largest real estate company in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. This is something that anyone giving a sales presentation should keep in mind.

When Does Your Sales Presentation Start?

When you open your presentation, understand you are opening long before you actually stand up and speak. If you want to have a great impact, interact with the audience, shake hands, meet as many as you can before you actually speak. We are very rarely nervous with one person, even if it?s someone very important. We only get nervous when it?s an audience, or a crowd, or a committee. So why don?t you use what I call the ?schmooze factor.? You?schmooze before you open your presentation. Then when you stand up you have already made friends. The first 30 seconds and the last 30 seconds should have the most impact. I don?t want you to start your speech with, ?Hello, my name is.? NO, because you?ve already met them. Even if you haven?t, there are much better ways to begin your presentation. Until you connect with the audience and they really don?t care who you are.

Give the opening and closing of your talk a little extra thought, time and effort. Get, ideas on how you might open and close your speech from this helpful free article, ?Open and Close Your Presentations with Power.?
