Lobbyists 2.0: 'The Internet Association' to Save Web, For Big Business

Creative Commons image by Xavier de Jaur?guiberry

On September 19, a great act of hypocrisy shall take shape. Last month, The National Journal reported the formation of a new Voltron-esque trade group called The Internet Association, which claims it will be ?the unified voice of the Internet economy,? dedicated to ?advancing public policy solutions to strengthen and protect an open, innovative and free Internet.?

Just exactly which companies belong to the Internet Association will remain unknown until it officially launches, but already word has slipped about the four main founding companies, which are Google, Facebook, eBay, and Amazon. Indeed, these four have come together to lobby Washington to for a free and open Internet for the people. Hmmm.

Borne out of the fight against SOPA/PIPA, The Internet Association bathes itself in the rhetoric of net neutrality and Internet freedom advocates. In classic Congressional revolving door style, the Internet Association announced former U.S. House and Energy Committee Deputy Staff Director Michael Beckerman as its President and CEO. In the press release, Beckerman said that ?the Internet?s decentralized and open model is what has enabled its unprecedented growth and innovation. We must guard against misguided attempts to handcuff this incredible source of job creation, freedom and creativity.?

The Internet Association was formed because ?The Internet must have a voice in Washington.? However, considering that these days money is speech, all four of these companies have a pretty substantial voice among legislators already. Witness:

  • In 2011 and 2012 (still with two quarters to go), Google has spent almost $10 million on lobbying each year.
  • Facebook spent an additional $1 million on lobbying from 2010 to 2011 and already has outpaced its 2011 total this year.
  • Ebay has spent over $1.5 million on lobbying each year from 2006 to 2011, topping out at over $3 million in 2006.
  • Similarly, Amazon has spent over $1 million on lobbying each year from 2006 to 2011, including having spent over $2 million in 2009 and 2010.

For comparison?s sake, Google?s lobbying expenditures for 2011 are only $1.5 million behind the tobacco company Altria and $3 million behind ExxonMobil, two of the most influential companies in Washington. There appears to be no indication that current lobbying expenditures will decrease. Instead, the Internet Association appears to be just a consolidation effort for specific issues, a practice that is par for the course.

For example, apparently the tens of millions of dollars that ExxonMobil has spent on lobbying in each of the past three years has not been enough. ExxonMobil is also a member of the American Petroleum Institute, a trade group for the oil and gas industry that has spent an additional $7 million on lobbying each year from 2009 to 2011. In its previous life as Philip Morris, Altria was a key member of the trade group The Tobacco Institute, also known as the trade group parodied in the book and film Thank You For Smoking.

In fact, The Internet Association is not even the first trade group for Facebook and eBay, who are members of NetChoice, ?a coalition of trade associations, eCommerce businesses, and online consumers,? though that group?s lobbying efforts have been less than substantial so far.

Just what form the lobbying will take, we can infer somewhat by the lobbying these companies have done in the past.

Both eBay and Amazon have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars lobbying over such bills as the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, the Marketplace Equity Act, and the Mainstreet Fairness Act, all in an attempt to avoid having to charge sales tax for their products, perhaps offering a different interpretation of the word ?free? as it pertains to the Internet. The lack of sales tax is one of the biggest competitive advantages of Internet retail businesses. Though recently, Amazon has conceded on the issue of sales tax in exchange for the opening of more exploitative distribution centers. The failure of such efforts perhaps demonstrates the need for The Internet Association.

All four of the companies have spent? hundreds of thousands of dollars on lobbying over privacy regulations and rules about user data. Facebook and Google?s struggles over the issues of privacy and data have been well documented, but even Amazon has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars lobbying over data retention, and eBay over behavioral tracking. Oddly enough, though they all spent a decent amount lobbying over CISPA, none of those companies have come out against it.

Perhaps equally as notable about The Internet Association though, is who?s missing in this ?unified voice of the Internet economy.? The names of more companies are sure to surface after the lobby goes live, but there are still some glaring omissions. Leaving aside tech plesiosaurs Microsoft and Apple, who aren?t dead-set on raging against the series of tubes model, where are Twitter and Yahoo? Or Netflix, Zynga,? AOL, or Reddit, or InterActiveCorp (this has been your weekly ?that corporation owns WHAT?? moment). I mean, if eBay gets an invite to the party?

With the possible exception of IAC, though, none of those companies are currently that megalomaniacal. Those companies aren?t constantly trying to expand across platforms, or create new platforms, or position themselves as conduits for literally all of your Internet activity. Though companies like Twitter and Netflix have also lobbied for net neutrality, those companies don?t stand to lose that much by being relegated to the status of a tube, while the Internet Association companies are each striving (except for eBay, clearly the Ringo) to be the series of tubes themselves.

The Internet Association is an uneasy alliance to be sure. Google is competing with Amazon over digital music sales, and with Facebook over social networking. Amazon has its own auction system. Google?s chief objection to SOPA is that it would have to police the Internet, which is unfair because it doesn?t own the Internet? yet. Don?t forget that Google-owned YouTube once viewed copyright infringement as central to its growth.

The Internet Association claims to represent their community of users as well as the companies, and indeed there are some ancillary benefits for those people that are not corporations from maintaining the dumping ground model of the Internet, such as increased freedom of expression. However, the point of The Internet Association is to prevent any outside authority from putting up the metaphorical barbed wire that would signal the end of the open range.

This fight is not out of some populist concern; it?s because each of these companies believe that the entire West belongs to them.

4 lost another going - SoberRecovery : Alcoholism Drug Addiction ...

Hello .....

Not even sure where to start at, suppose I'll start with a little family background....
Grandparents suffered and died from alcoholism (car wreck DWI)
Father alcoholic suicide
Youngest brother drug addict / alcholic suicide
Oldest brother, the reason for my determination to not loose another to this disease, current alcoholic with severe progression in the past 2yrs

And then there is mom the enabler .... dad died when I was only 2, mom had the four of us to raise on $2.25per hr by herself, and she did, struggling each day to make ends meet and be home with us too. But she managed and is or was the absolutely strongest woman I know til recently.......

Since the loss of my youngest brother 3yrs ago things have really fallen apart.....
My mother has become very afraid, fragile, scared to say NO, which I can never understand what she is feeling with the loss of a child, I have one son and not sure I could survive without him.

My oldest brother has drank since I can remember, and has just progressed to 20+ beers per day since the loss of our youngest brother. He is no longer able to hold down a job for the "need" for alcohol, he has stolen from all of us to support his addicition, even down to stealing my mothers checks over drawing her account and leaving her without even the money to eat.
It has been a major struggle for us all to contend with. Mom buys his beer as he threatens suicide at least once a week, she is scared, no matter how many times he says it in elaborate details to her she can't say no due to she is scared to loose him, another child.

Recentlyfor about the past month for whatever reason he has acknowledged his addiction, he has become very emotional crying all the time, not sleeping, not eating, still threatens suicide, and begging for help. And he has never been an emotional person he always saw it as weakness and very seldomly cried.

Financially we are all struggling, with mom spending every thing she makes to support him and his addiction, and me trying to keep her car from being reposed and paying bad checks for her we are just at the bottom of the barrel scrapping by. And he is pleading for help !
Every avenue we have tried to get him help dead ends with something no insurance, no money, he doesn't have an DL/or ID and a has a warrant for a traffic violation b/c having alcohol was MORE important than paying his traffic fines, so we run into a road block there with any state funded programs, its just feels hopeless. I can see mom giving up more and more each day, her fight is gone, she is tired, each time we hit a road block it tears her down for days. And my brother goes from anger to sick to scared to crying and every extreme in between.

Today we made an appointment with another program praying to god this one comes through.

I have been reading a lot since I joined this group this is my first post I am very glad I found it ! Best wishes to everyone with your struggles, loses, and recovery this is one mean disease.

Hope to be posting an update soon that we found a program

'Tonight Show' trims staff; Leno takes pay cut

By MICHAEL LIEDTKE , AP

Matt Sayles / AP

"The Tonight Show" has laid off about two dozen workers, prompting host Jay Leno to accept a pay cut to spare other staffers as NBC clamps down on expenses.

NBC Universal imposed the cutbacks Friday, according to a person familiar with the moves. The person asked not to be identified because NBC Universal hadn't officially disclosed the cost cutting.

(NBCNews.com is owned by NBC Universal.)

The payroll purge affected about 10 percent of the roughly 200 people who work on "The Tonight Show," still the top-rated late-night program. Viewers shouldn't notice any changes in programming at "The Tonight Show," the person said.

NBC Universal is trying to improve its financial performance under the ownership of Comcast Corp., which bought the entertainment company last year.

Leno had been making between $25 million to $30 million annually as the host of "The Tonight Show." His salary will be reduced to about $20 million after making the job-saving concessions. Leno also brings in substantial income touring as a stand-up comedian.

"Jay's foremost concern is for the wonderful people who work with him at 'The Tonight Show,'" said Bruce Bobbins, a spokesman for Leno. "He did what was necessary to ensure their well-being."

Several other staffers on "The Tonight Show" also absorbed pay cuts.

David Letterman, the host of a rival late-night show on CBS, accepted a significant pay cut in 2009.

The show's cost-cutting measures were first reported by Deadline Hollywood, a website that tracks the entertainment industry.

Comcast bought a controlling interest in NBC Universal for $6.2 billion in cash and several cable-TV channels valued at $7.25 billion. Besides its TV network and several cable channels, NBC also owns the Universal Pictures movie studio and theme parks.

Comcast, which is based in Philadelphia, makes most of its money selling cable TV and high-speed Internet access.

Despite its solid ratings, "The Tonight Show" hasn't been a big moneymaker. That prompted the cuts Friday, which are expected to trim the program's weekly budget by about $600,000, or 25 percent, to $1.7 million. That's back to its levels of a few years ago.

Leno outmaneuvered Letterman to succeed Johnny Carson as "The Tonight Show" host in 1992 and remained in one of television's most sought-after jobs for the next 17 years. At NBC's behest, he left the show in 2009 and was replaced by Conan O'Brien. After a few months hosting his own show in an earlier time slot, Leno returned as "The Tonight Show" host in 2010 in a decision that provoked a nasty fight between O'Brien and NBC.

O'Brien now hosts a late-night talk show on TBS. ?

During Leno's brief stint hosting his prime-time program, his show's weekly budget escalated and wasn't reduced significantly to reflect his return to the late-night slot until now.

AP Television Writer Frazier Moore contributed to this story.?

Romney steps up fundraisers ahead of convention

(Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

RIVERHEAD, N.Y.?Mitt Romney hasn't held a public rally since Tuesday, when he concluded his four-day battleground state bus tour in Ohio. But the presumptive Republican nominee has still been busy traveling the country in search of campaign cash.

Since Wednesday, Romney has headlined at least a half a dozen fundraisers taking him through North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina and Massachusetts. On Friday, he attended four separate events?including two finance roundtables at his campaign headquarters in Boston and two finance events in the Hamptons in New York.

On Saturday morning, the GOP candidate kicked off a grueling 14-hour day that includes six separate fundraisers along the Massachusetts coast, including stops Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Campaign aides estimated Romney would raise at least $7 million from all the events on Friday and Saturday.

Speaking to a pool of reporters on his campaign plane Saturday, Romney said he'd rather be campaigning than raising money, but said he had to spend so much time fundraising to keep pace with President Barack Obama and his allies.

"That's the challenge with a president who blew through the federal spending limits. It means that campaigns now have to spend a disproportionate amount of time fundraising," Romney said. "You appreciate all the help you get, but you wish you could spend more time on the campaign trail."

But Romney's fundraising schedule shows no signs of letting up. On Monday, Romney will hold a town hall with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, in New Hampshire, but then he'll be back on the finance circuit, heading events in New Orleans and West Texas early next week.

The Basics of Direct Email Marketing ? Web Design Bangkok

Email marketing is one of the most effective ways of promoting and selling products and systems online. A lot of people have the assumption that email marketing is nothing more than ?spamming?, but when done intelligently email marketing can allow business people to generate new sales as well as ongoing income.

The first thing to be aware of is that true email marketing comes from getting the names and email addresses of qualified leads. This is not as simple as buying lists of names and email addresses; although many beginning marketers do try this approach. The best form of email marketing is ?opt-in? email marketing, where visitors to the marketer?s website fill in a form with their name and email address (and sometimes other information) and then give the marketer permission to send them more information.

Most marketers now use a double opt-in strategy where the lead fills in a form, and is then sent a link in an email address asking them to confirm that they requested further information. In this way the marketer can be confident that everyone in their mailing list does want to receive such information, and they also can not be accused of spamming. If an interested party no longer wants to receive information from the marketer they can choose to opt out and unsubscribe from the marketer?s list.

The best email marketers create informative newsletters which are designed to provide useful information to the reader. In this way the marketer builds up a relationship with his or her readers through regular email newsletters, and the reader develops trust in the marketer. When the marketer does wish to promote or sell a product, their readers are already interested in the type of product they are promoting, and the response will be a great deal more satisfactory than trying to send out a sales letter before building trust, or trying to promote products to people who have not specifically requested information and who may not be interested in what the marketer is offering.

In order to profit successfully from email marketing, you need to have a means by which people can opt in to your list. This is generally a form on your website, which can be created in house, but more commonly email marketers will choose autoresponders or mailing list software companies to deal with their subscribers. There are many such companies online who will do the job for a reasonable price, making it simple for the marketer to get new subscriptions and send out informative and marketing emails to all subscribers.

The marketer can either send out pre-arranged emails to each new subscriber or can simply choose to send a daily or weekly newsletter, or can use both methods. Quite often, marketers interest people by offering free information. They might prepare a series of lessons or informative emails which are sent out regularly to each new subscriber from the time the subscriber first puts their name and email address down and requests information. Some marketers use a combination of these two techniques.

The best email marketers know that building a relationship with their subscribers is the key to successful marketing. If they can provide informative newsletters with interesting and valuable information, subscribers will develop a solid level of trust in the marketer. That way, when the marketer promotes a product or service, they will be more inclined to purchase, based on the trust already established. It can take time and effort to build up a solid subscriber list, but it is well worth it for any online entrepreneur or businessperson who is looking for long term results.

Continuity Family Business Consulting: Successful Ways to Guide ...

CONTINUITY

FAMILY BUSINESS CONSULTING

US/CANADA: 877-925-5149 INTERNATIONAL: 1-617-500-3110

Today?s struggling economy has affected many businesses, especially those that are family owned and operated. Demographics, technology and economics are now converging problems, leaving businesses with questions like ?where did all the baby boomers go?,? ?how can I compete with technology?,? and ?how do we battle external challenges?? ?

Is there a successful way to guide your family business through tough and changing times? Of course! Here are a couple of steps to follow to help guide your business in the right direction, courtesy of financialpost.com.

Step 1: Ask a few questions ? Is your business stable? Figure it out by asking a few question like, ?Are we generating or burning through cash?? ?Are we losing key internal resources through competition, or market obsolescence eliminating lines of business or key staff departures?? ?Is the business value flat, increasing or declining?? ?Are there key things the business needs to add to remain stable?? and ?Will investments need to be made just to maintain the business?? ?

What type of questions do you ask when evaluating your business??

Step 2: Companies that are currently unstable, should use this step to figure out who really owns the business.

?The stark reality is it is that person?s sole responsibility to stabilize the business. This could involve injecting money into the business or other hard choices. This may not be as simple as looking at the shareholder agreement or list of current shareholders with family-owned companies. Until the business is stable, you can?t look too far into the future generations seeking responsibility to address current challenges,? (FinancialPost.com).

This is at the core of most problems plaguing many western countries: no one wants to own the problem of ?crushing debt burdens and social decline,? therefore, no one is truly invested in solving it (FinancialPost.com).

To break this vicious cycle, the actual owners of the business must work to stabilize the business and solve the current challenges. Why is this important? ?Passing on an unstable business to the next generation is equivalent to tossing them a grenade after the pin has been pulled,? (FinancialPost.com).

Is there a problem you've been avoiding to correct because it doesn't directly concern your future? Is there an issue someone higher up is refusing to address??

Step 3: Create a decision-making mechanism by any means. ?Once the state of the business is understood and the decision making body is assembled, how does this group make decisions to attain stability? Unanimous agreement? Democratically, one person one vote? Or corporately, one share one vote? Or does one person or camp take control, either with the acquiescence of the others or in a more hostile situation?? (FinancialPost.com).

Don?t allow your company to become paralyzed and end up a victim of circumstance. Hard to specify what movement is needed, but decisions need to be made, and there is no perfect template ? figure out what works best for your structure.

How does your business make decisions? Who holds the most weight, or is every one's voted equally weighed? Does your company have a decision-making mechanism already in place? ?

Do you think these tips can help your family business? Answer our questions and let us know on our Facebook page, linked HERE.

'Soft robots' could camouflage themselves one minute, and stand out, the next

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? A team of researchers led by George Whitesides, the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor, has already broken new engineering ground with the development of soft, silicone-based robots inspired by creatures like starfish and squid.

Now, they're working to give those robots the ability to disguise themselves.

As demonstrated in an August 16 paper published in Science, researchers have developed a system -- again, inspired by nature -- that allows the soft robots to either camouflage themselves against a background, or to make bold color displays. Such a "dynamic coloration" system could one day have a host of uses, ranging from helping doctors plan complex surgeries to acting as a visual marker to help search crews following a disaster, said Stephen Morin, a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Chemistry and Chemical Biology and first author of the paper.

"When we began working on soft robots, we were inspired by soft organisms, including octopi and squid," Morin said. "One of the fascinating characteristics of these animals is their ability to control their appearance, and that inspired us to take this idea further and explore dynamic coloration. I think the important thing we've shown in this paper is that even when using simple systems -- in this case we have simple, open-ended micro-channels -- you can achieve a great deal in terms of your ability to camouflage an object, or to display where an object is."

"One of the most interesting questions in science is 'Why do animals have the shape, and color, and capabilities that they do?'" said Whitesides. "Evolution might lead to a particular form, but why? One function of our work on robotics is to give us, and others interested in this kind of question, systems that we can use to test ideas. Here the question might be: 'How does a small crawling organism most efficiently disguise (or advertise) itself in leaves?' These robots are test-beds for ideas about form and color and movement."

Just as with the soft robots, the "color layers" used in the camouflage start as molds created using 3D printers. Silicone is then poured into the molds to create micro-channels, which are topped with another layer of silicone. The layers can be created as a separate sheet that sits atop the soft robots, or incorporated directly into their structure. Once created, researchers can pump colored liquids into the channels, causing the robot to mimic the colors and patterns of its environment.

The system's camouflage capabilities aren't limited to visible colors though.

By pumping heated or cooled liquids into the channels, researchers can camouflage the robots thermally (infrared color). Other tests described in the Science paper used fluorescent liquids that allowed the color layers to literally glow in the dark.

The uses for the color-layer technology, however, don't end at camouflage.

Just as animals use color change to communicate, Morin envisions robots using the system as a way to signal their position, both to other robots, and to the public. As an example, he cited the possible use of the soft machines during search and rescue operations following a disaster. In dimly lit conditions, he said, a robot that stands out from its surroundings (or even glows in the dark) could be useful in leading rescue crews trying to locate survivors.

"What we hope is that this work can inspire other researchers to think about these problems and approach them from different angles," he continued. "There are many biologists who are studying animal behavior as it relates to camouflage, and they use different models to do that. We think something like this might enable them to explore new questions, and that will be valuable."

AP Interview: Artist Kusama sees the world in dots

TOKYO (AP) ? Polka dots are Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama's lifelong inspiration, obsession and passion.

And so they're everywhere ? not only on canvases but on installations shaped like gnarled tentacles and oversized yellow pumpkins. As part of her retrospective on exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, they also sparkle as "firefly" light bulbs reflected on water and mirrors.

Kusama's signature splash of dots has now arrived in the realm of fashion in a collection from French luxury brand Louis Vuitton ? bags, sunglasses, shoes and coats.

"Polka dots are fabulous," Kusama said in a recent interview with The Associated Press, looking much younger than her 83 years in a bright red wig, a polka dot dress she designed herself and one of the new Louis Vuitton polka dot scarves.

Dots aside, Kusama cuts an odd figure for the fashion world. She has lived in a psychiatric institution for decades, battling demons that feed her art.

Still, in her Tokyo studio, filled with wall-sized paintings throbbing with her repetitive dots, Kusama said the collaboration was a natural, developed from her friendship with Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs.

Louis Vuitton had already scored success 10 years ago by collaborating on a bag line with another Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami. The latest Kusama collection is showcased at its boutiques around the world, including New York, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore, sometimes with replica dolls of Kusama.

"The polka dots cover the products infinitely," said Louis Vuitton, which racks up 24 billion euros ($29 billion) in annual revenue, a significant portion in Japan. "No middle, no beginning and no end."

Dots started popping up in Kusama's work more than 50 years ago, from her early days as a pioneer Japanese woman venturing abroad.

Like most middle-class families in Japan those days, her parents, who ran a flower nursery, were eager to simply get her married. They wanted to buy her kimono, not paints and brushes. She knew she had to get away. And she chose America.

Dots may be fashionable today. But when Kusama arrived in New York in 1958, the fad was "action painting," characterized by dribbles, swooshes and smears, not dots. She suffered years of poverty and obscurity. But she kept painting the dots.

She put circles of paper on people's bodies, and once a horse, in "happening" anti-war performances in the late 1960s, which got some people arrested for obscenity but helped get media attention for her art. While in New York, she befriended artists like Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keefe and Joseph Cornell, who praised her innovative style.

Since then, the times have caught up with Kusama.

In 2008, Christie's auctioned her work for $5.8 million. Her retrospective at the Whitney Museum was previously at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Tate Modern in London. Earlier this month, a major exhibition "Eternity of Eternal Eternity" opened in her home town of Matsumoto, Nagano prefecture, complete with polka-dot shuttle buses.

"I've always been amazed at Kusama's ability to pick up on and meld current trends in thoroughly original ways," said Lynn Zelevansky, Carnegie Museum of Art director.

"During her New York years, her work fused Abstract Expressionist, Minimalist and Pop art elements, with an added dash of sexuality and the baseness of bodily functions. She was a precursor of feminist art of the 1970s and much of the work that was produced in the '80s around the AIDS crisis," she said.

Dots had a rather sad beginning for Kusama. Since her childhood, she had recurring hallucinations. A portrait of her mother that she drew when she was 10 years old shows a forlorn face covered with spots. Immersing herself in her art was a way of overcoming her fears and hallucinations.

Since her return to Japan nearly 40 years ago, Kusama has lived in a psychiatric hospital and remains on medication to prevent depression and suicidal drives. But she commutes daily to her studio and works viciously on her paintings.

Kusama, who has also made films and published several novels, acknowledged she doesn't know where she gets her ideas. She just picks up her brush and starts drawing.

"I think, 'Oh, I drew that? I was thinking that,'" she said in her characteristic unsmiling matter-of-fact style of speaking.

Over the years, Kusama has made quirky but stunning works like "Macaroni Girl," a female figure plastered with macaroni, which expresses the fear of food; "The Visionary Flowers," giant sculptures of twisting tulips, and "Mirrored Corridor," a room with mirrors that delivers an illusion of a field of phallic protrusions speckled with dots.

The works are triumphant, humorous celebrations of potential, vulnerability and defiance ? like Kusama herself, who at one moment, declares herself "an artistic revolutionary," and then, the next, mumbles: "I am so afraid, all the time, of everything."

Her latest project is an ambitious series of paintings with whimsical motifs such as triangles and swirls, along with her trademark dots, in vibrant, almost fluorescent colors.

As Kusama worked on No. 196 in the series, the look of concentration was childlike yet fierce as she painted red dots inside white dots, one by one.

"I want to create a thousand paintings, maybe two thousand paintings, as many as I can draw," she said. "I will keep painting until I die."
